Jets vs. Pats vs. Dolphins... Welcome to AFC East insanity
eSports' Sinista1 touches base about the Patriots loss to the Jets, and defines irony while slapping Dolphins' fans across the face with his description of the team.
A few weeks back I had defined the word parity for all of my fans out there. This week I have another word for you.
* Irony (n) (I' ro ni): subtle sarcasm or humor implying the opposite of what is expressed.
Remember this word. I'll get into it later.
A week ago the Pats lost to the Tennessee Titans on Monday Night Football, and embarrassed themselves to the point that some of them should have been wearing bags over their heads. Well, after their loss to the Jets this past Sunday, I'm sure the guys are still wearing those very same bags.
The game against the Jets was a winnable game on all aspects, but for some reason, play calling and execution fell flat after halftime. I mean you know things are bad after a loss and people are leaving the stadium cursing WR Troy Brown. The Pats had every chance to win, but found ways to give the Jets nothing but Christmas gifts courtesy of QB Tom Brady, cornerback Leonard Myers, punter Ken Walter and Bill Belichick's coaching staff.
I hate to single people out because football is a team sport, but the play of these guys really brought the team down.
P Ken Walter: Walter should be ready to clean out his locker at the end of this season because there is no way this team is going to continue paying him the $900 grand he's getting, and as far as I'm concerned he should donate his $120,000 signing bonus to charity the way he donates field position to other teams.
CB Leonard Myers: This guy knew on Thursday that CB Otis Smith had hit the IR, so you would at least think this guy would have known he was going to be a marked target come game time. Instead, he allowed himself to be abused by the Jets wide receiver corps and QB Chad Pennington.
QB Tom Brady: To be honest, I've heard some stories about the problem with him this season, and I can't say if they are true, but as for now it is all hearsay, and I'll keep those stories to myself. As for my opinion on Tom Brady...
Well, anyone who has read my stuff knows how vocal I've been on this guy, and right now I think there maybe something wrong with him whether it be a bad shoulder, wrist, hand or something. This guy never had the long ball, but lately he can't seem to hit anything. And if he is trying to play injured, then it is understandable after what fell his way last season.
Oh, you don't think these QB's worry about what happened with the way things went down with the Pats last year. Alright, why don't you ask Jets QB Vinny Testeverde how he feels, Eagles QB Donovan McNabb, or better yet, Rams QB Kurt Warner, who came back and took his spot over and tried to hide a broken hand. Warner is as good as gone in St. Louis and Vinny is everything but erased from the Jets roster as far as I'm concerned.
Brady has also dodged another bullet, and that is QB Drew Bledsoe. Yeah he's been picked to go to the Pro Bowl while Brady sits at home, but the Pats are still in playoff contention for a trip to the Super Bowl. Things would have been a lot different if the Bills had won two or three of those close OT games they lost early on. Then the Bledsoe Bullet would have hit Brady square in the head, and ignited a war on morning sports radio like you've never seen before in the New England area.
BB's Coaching Staff: Earlier this year, offensive coordinator Charlie Weiss and defensive coordinator Romeo Crennel were atop everyone's wish lists as soon to be head coaches. Well, after this year you can expect these guys to be here next year unless Bill Parcells comes out of retirement to go to Dallas, and draws them away.
Other than that, I'm still trying to wonder where is this stuff from the beginning of the year?
1. The no-huddle offense.
2. The four-wide threat.
3. The no-down linemen.
4. Running up the gut.
5. Strong safety Lawyer Milloy,
That last one was a shot because Milloy has always been one of my favorites on this team, but this year his production has been down, way down. Last season he finished with 112 combined tackles, 2.5 sacks, two interceptions, four passes deflected and one forced fumble. This year he heads into week 17 with 81 combined tackles, six passes deflected and one tackle on special teams. Nothing else, no interceptions, no sacks, no forced or recovered fumbles. But, he still made it to the Pro Bowl even though this is his worst season ever.
Now let's get back to the word irony. Do you remember the definition?
Well, here is Patriots irony at it's best.
This weekend the Miami Dolphins come to town with the best running back in the league, Ricky Williams. All season the Pats have allowed themselves to be run over like dead fans at an open seating concert. Now I hate to use that analogy, but it's the only way to describe my disappointment over these guys stopping the run without LB Tedy Bruschi in the game. But, one man shouldn't make a difference in stopping the run.
As for defense, Miami's Jason Taylor leads the league in sacks.
So how does irony work into this? Knowing the history of the Pats, they'll come out onto the field and lay waste to the Dolphins while holding Williams to under 100 yards, but then the Jets will upset the Packers and take the AFC East division.
Hello, IRONY!
Now I've probably got some Dolphins fans panties in an uproar, but you know damn well that the Dolphins are the NFL's version of our beloved Boston Red Sox. Since that magical year in 1972, the Fins motto has been "...always a bridesmaid, but mever a bride."
