Eye Care
The most expressive part of our body, usually gets lagged behind as the most neglected one too.
While most people believe that caring for eyes is the next most important thing after maintaining a good and healthy diet, it is also true that most of us, despite our rich diets, have to use spectacles to save them. For most of us, until date, we believe that spectacles are largely used by people who have a weak eye sight. While quite a few people are genetically born with that defect that makes us depend on glasses, its also true that our diet plays a huge role in taking care of our eyes.
The first most inexpensive thing that we can do to help us save our eyes is to get up early. Sounds funny doesn’t it! But its true that most people who pursue their morning walks diligently, are less prone to eye infections as the fresh morning air helps us and our bodies to a large extent. Second in line is our protein intake. Fish, eggs, green leafy vegetables and lots of fresh fruits and vegetables are known remedies for a good eye sight. Of course we know all of this, you might say! Well the novelty in this discussion is that you need to add in a few exercises too to this effect.
Yoga and eyes
While there are several asanas and exercises that directly affect the eyesight, the breathing exercises and specifically palming greatly help the eyes. Palming is a simple technique, where (as the name suggests) you make use of both your palms and cover your eyes completely. Allowing your hands to stay in this position, with your eyes closed, allows the energy from your palms to reach your eyes. Repetitive exercises in this fashion have known to delay your number from increasing. Another good exercise or asana is the head stand, if you can manage that, while the shoulder stand also helps, the most time consuming and effective exercise in Yoga for the eyes is known as Trataka. Since my research for the best exercise for eyes is still on, I have noticed that this exercise really makes the eye muscles, (that are made lazy, thanks to lack of exercise), strong. This form of exercise requires you to light a candle and you to constantly fix your gaze on the tip of its flame.
Once you’ve concentrated enough, you may move your gaze from one angle to another, without moving your head. This form of exercise requires much of your concentration and hence its best to perform this when you’re not in a hurry and without any distraction of any sort. A simper method of keeping your eyes fresh would be frequent blinks and also frequent eye washes to keep them from getting tired. Now you may ask me as to how in God’s name can breathing exercises help your eye sight. I mean we all know that wearing numbered lenses can make your number go constant, but how does breathing exercises, or Pranayam help in here. The result is rather simple.
Most of us don’t breathe right and this sort of breathing believe it or not helps us a breeding ground for all allergies floating in the air, looking for a prey. When you breathe right, as learn it from a Yoga exponent, you are less prone to coughs and colds and therefore your T zone which includes your forehead, eyes and nasal passage is largely clear.
So if there’s no phlegm getting deposited on you T zone your passage is largely clear, clear enough for you to carry out your exercises of the eyes. Another interesting and simple (read as without any cost) method is by concentrating on the lettering for various sign boards while you are being driven, or perhaps when you are waiting for your bus. This helps in getting your presbyopia treated, as you make yourself excellent in focusing on things placed at a distance.
Generally presbyopia or far sightedness occurs early in age, as most of the time we are involved in looking at things that are at closer proximities. When you focus at far away objects, you are sure to add on another exercise, thereby helping you improve your eyesight. For those who have just started using the computer or have just started working, I’d advise you to wear a zero numbered anti glare spectacle to save your eyes, you may not have it numbered, but you are sure to save your eyes. Sedentary jobs have their benefits and disadvantages.
Try getting up from your place after every 20 minutes, blink as much as possible and focus your attention from where you are seated, perhaps at a distant notice board or even trying to figure out who is that good looking babe who’s just dropped into your office! Believe me, you sure can get away with it, all in the name of improving your eye sight! Worth trying, what say?!
