Detroit Lions win, but it is only one game
After watching the Lions players throwing helmets and upper management hugging, one would think Detroit just won a playoff spot. Celebrating at 1-12 is just ridiculous.
After winning the game against the now 5-8 Minnesota Vikings, the Detroit Lions were celebrating like they just won the Super Bowl.
Johnnie Morton threw his helmet high in the air, there were hugs everywhere in the Lions' luxury box, and some of the fans were cheering like this team has finally made it.
But, everyone in the NFL knows that the Lions are just battling the Carolina Panthers for the worst record in the league. Being 1-12 now, where basically the same team won nine games the year before, is nothing to be happy about.
In my opinion, there is only one reason to be somewhat happy about the win.
It looks like Charlie Batch will finally be replaced by Mike McMahon next year. Why Marty Mornhinweg waited until he had to start McMahon because of Batch's injury is still a mystery.
I, along with many other Lion fans, have been calling for Charlie's head since the beginning of the year. But, Mornhinweg stuck with Batch, throwing McMahon in for a series or two whenever the time seemed right.
McMahon never had a chance to get comfortable, knowing any mistakes he made would cost him time on the field. Now, he got his chance to run the team and made the most of it.
However, don't forget, Batch was looked at as the answer at quarterback just a couple of years ago. We know what happened there.
It was embarrassing to watch the celebration on the field. Mornhinweg getting a Gatorade bath was laughable. Johnnie Morton telling Jay Leno to kiss his behind was pretty humorous, also. Matt Millen in the luxury box shaking his fists and hugging anyone close to him was almost as fun to watch as his frown and frustration he showed the last 12 weeks.
I'm surprised there were no riots in the city of Detroit with fans starting fires and tipping over cars.
Sure, the Lions had a tough 12 games and needed to show some emotion with a first win. But, let's put it in perspective. They are now an awesome 1-12 team who plays Pittsburgh next week.
When all of the goals for the team are thrown into the garbage, and the only goal is to win one game, reaching this monumental win should not be celebrated like a Super Bowl victory. I just wonder if any other team in the NFL, besides an expansion team, would be celebrating as much.
Being a Lion fan, I now see why Detroit is never in the final game of the year. Marty and the rest of the Lion organization should act with class and just walk off the field a little upset that they didn't win any more games than they have so far.
As the saying goes, "act like you have been there before" when you score a touchdown, or, in this case, when you win a game.
Oh, I forgot, the Lions haven't been there in the last 12 games, so they don't know how to act.
