Paris Mall to Get Classical New Look

Classical realism triumphed over radical innovation yesterday when the mayor of Paris chose a little-known French architect to oversee a full-scale revamp of the capital's huge but crumbling mall complex, Les Halles.

The socialist mayor, Bertrand Delanoe, said David Mangin's project was the "most realistic and the most intelligent" proposal for the city centre site. It was also the cheapest, costing €200m (£140m).

Mr Mangin's project envisages some four hectares (10 acres) of public green space, divided by a sweeping 30-metre-wide promenade and culminating in a two-hectare copper-and-glass roof covering the remodelled shopping centre.

Mr Mangin's blueprint was favoured by Green party members of the city council, as well as by most locals who liked the amount of green space and priority given to residents' needs such as a children's play area and neighbourhood shops.
