Kumble Snapped Up By Surrey

Cricket: Surrey have completed the signing of India leg-spinner Anil Kumble for next season.
Surrey have completed the signing of India leg-spinner Anil Kumble for next season.

He is set to make his debut against Northamptonshire on July 14 and will be available for eight Liverpool Victoria Championship matches after the conclusion of the Test series between India and the West Indies.

Kumble is India's leading wicket taker and finished with 10 for 157 as India beat Sri Lanka in the second Test in Delhi today. The 35-year-old has played county cricket for Leicestershire and Northamptonshire and is relishing joining Surrey, who finished third from bottom of the Frizzell County Championship last season. "It's great to have this opportunity to play for Surrey and it is something I am looking forward to immensely. This is a new chapter in Surrey's history and I want to help them get back on track to being a Championship-winning side," he said.

Surrey coach Alan Butcher added: "Anil is recognised as one of the best bowlers in world cricket. In addition, his character and professionalism are also hugely admired. Any coach would welcome these qualities in his dressing room. His presence will be a huge mid-season boost to us next year as we attempt to gain promotion to division one."

India's 188-run win over Sri Lanka in the second Test in New Delhi gives them a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. Chasing an improbable 436 runs to win, Sri Lanka were bowled out for 247 in their second innings midway through the afternoon session on the final day.
