'Disgusted' Gough escapes punishment

Darren Gough has escaped punishment for publicly criticising the England and Wales Cricket Board's chairman Lord MacLaurin.

In a television interview Gough said he was "disgusted" with MacLaurin for castigating the Lancashire all-rounder Andrew Flintoff for not taking his recovery from a hernia operation seriously enough. But Gerard Elias QC, the chairman of the ECB's discipline standing committee, yesterday announced that no action would be taken against Gough, although he has written a private letter to the Yorkshire paceman about his comments.

The ECB also confirmed that Elias was not asked to consider any aspect of Gough and Flintoff's alleged behaviour at the Lilleshall National Sports Centre before the Ashes tour because the board had not received any formal complaints.
