Description of Glorious Greece and it's Islands.
"There are two kinds of people; Greeks and everyone else who wish they was Greek." -- My Big Fat Greek Wedding
ATHENS :
When Athens won the honor of being the only city in the world to host the Summer Olympics twice in 2004, the entire city had major renovations and upgrades done. From the airport to the highways and metro system Athens is more efficient and cosmopolitan than ever before.
Modern Athens, is an international city which offers the foreign visitors unlimited possibilities for excursions, sightseeing, art, culture, dining and night life.
Athens has literally thousands of traditional places ‘tavernas’ -- to dine and dessert at. One thing you can count on here is that you’ll always find delicious, inexpensive food in the city and its suburbs, along with hundreds of restaurants of every style and nationality. Athens is also very much alive at night, boasting some of Europe’s hottest nightclubs. Enjoy a film or a play in Athenian style open-air amphitheatres and cinemas.
The remarkable thing about Athens is that it still retains its aura of ancient glory which will become evident when you take an evening stroll through the city. It is pure magic especially to those ready, willing, and able to understand and appreciate its unalterable beauty. This is the perfect city to start your Greek getaway before you venture out onto the Cyclades islands on the glorious Aegean Sea.
CYCLADES ISLANDS: Mykonos, Crete (Heraklion), Paros, Santorini
Mykonos :
Legend has it that Hercules slew his giant enemies on Mykonos and that the large rocks which lie scattered about the island are their petrified corpses. Even though Mykonos has become one of the most popular island destinations in the past ten years, it still retains its charm as only 5,500 people live on the tiny island. This strip of Aegean paradise stretches out 80km of coast line and is only 5km wide.>
Santorini:
Santorini was created over 80,000 years ago when a volcano erupted and the ash that emerged formed a giant ring-like shape. The island filled out further when another eruption took place in 1450 B.C and created what we know today as the collective islands of Santorini, Thirasia, and Aspronisi. Santorini is an island of unusual beauty and character-- the wildness of the landscape, the breathtaking view, the multicolored beaches formed by the volcano's lava and the deep blue Aegean Sea combine a picture of wild, colorful and imposing beauty.
Guests looking for rest and relaxation will enjoy the island’s traditional village feel and colorful architecture while enjoying a vast variety of accommodations including luxury hotels and apartments. Elegant restaurants, stylish clubs and beautiful black sand beaches will offer visitors to Santorini an unforgettable vacation.
Crete :
Crete is Greece’s largest island and Herakleio is the island’s largest and most commercial area. Luxury hotels and gorgeous beaches, as well as world class shopping, dining and energetic discothèques line this coastline. Crete has a marvelous physical environment, from the big blue sea and skyscape to the picturesque villages and splendor of the ancient monuments are scattered throughout the island.
Herakleio in Crete is unique because nowhere else succeeds quite so well in blending an ancient culture and amazing natural beauty with the advantages of the modern world.
Paros :
The islands of Paros and Antiparos lie in the center of all the Cyclades islands between Naxos and Sifnos. On Paros life slows down to the most carefree and relaxing state, even during the spring and summer months when the it’s full of visitors from the world over. A large part of the coastline is steep, rocky and broken by small, sandy beaches. Only on the eastern side of the island does one find really long, golden beaches.
Paros also has two large natural bays; Parikia and Naoussa, where you can find beautiful, protected sandy beaches. Whether you are looking for crowded cosmopolitan beaches with bars and water sports, or a quiet harbor where you can swim privately in crystal waters and enjoy the beauty of the landscape, this island offers all the options for your specific needs.
Rhodes :
Due to its location, Rhodes is fortunate enough to receive almost a full year’s worth of sunshine and a very mild climate. You can bet you’ll get a great tan here. It has the highest population of any of the Greek islands with approximately 90, 000 people living there year-round and hosting more than 1, 250, 000 visitors a year. Being one of the most popular and beautiful vacation islands, Greeks come here to holiday themselves.
Rhodes boasts an excellent tourist network—offering the best in hotel accommodations, dining, entertainment and long continuous stretches of clean, sandy beaches. The capital of Rhodes has 60,000 permanent residents and is the commercial hub for the entire Aegean. Here you will find how the island combines modern life with a rich historical past, as there are so many ancient wonders to explore on Rhodes.
Patmos :
This stunning Greek island lies near the coast of Turkey and has a wonderful blend of both cultures. The coastline is lined with quaint hotels and apartments available for rent, small forests surround many lovely beaches. The best beach is arguably in the town of Kambos. The historical significance can be seen all over Patmos, St. John was inspired to write the Book Of Revelation after being exiled to the island in 95 A.D.
