Leonardo DiCaprio: "Titanic" Trial on the Horizon
Court set to decide whether Leonardo DiCaprio was instrumental in the assault and battery of a rival suitor of Elizabeth Berkley.
The "Titanic" star and Hollywood heartthrob must answer the accusations of a $45 million lawsuit, which alleges that DiCaprio incited the 1998 attack and beating of Roger Wilson, a 41-year-old screen writer and actor. According to the suit, Leo and a group of friends were lounging at New York’s posh Asia de Cuba restaurant on March 4, 1998, when Elizabeth Berkley entered the establishment, accompanied by her now-former-boyfriend, Roger Wilson. Apparently, DiCaprio was immediately drawn to Berkley, the star of the now-infamous "Showgirls," and Leo’s advances were immediately noticed by Wilson, who was quick to voice his displeasure with the developments.
Although a lower court has already dismissed charges that Leonardo struck Wilson during the ensuing melee, he may still be liable for damages because he was heard offering instructions and encouragement to Wilson’s attackers. It is because of his actions during the brawl that Leo is now facing a potentially huge judgment against him and the possibility of a PR nightmare that would surely result from him being found responsible for the damages in a court of law.
Documents filed in connection with the case describe DiCaprio shouting to his cronies, "Let’s go kick his ass!" as the altercation got under way outside the restaurant. Apparently, the wild act of machismo did little to sway the interest of Berkley, who was most likely appalled by the display. Everyone has seen that Leo is adept at abandoning a sinking ship, but the waters he will be in after this one goes down may be even more frigid than the North Atlantic.
