Backstreet Boy Howie D’s Emotional Crusade
Backstreet Boy Howie Dorough is on an emotional crusade for an alliance between Veritas Medicine and the Dorough Lupus Foundation.
Dorough recently toured Children’s Hospital in Boston as part of an alliance between the two foundations. The Dorough Lupus Foundation was started by Dorough and his family after his sister, Caroline, died of lupus in 1998. Veritas Medicine is an online source of information on clinical trials and treatments of lupus and 50 other diseases. Dorough believes this union could prove helpful to lupus sufferers as well as people suffering from other diseases. He feels his sister might have benefited from the information available through Veritas Medicine.
Lupus normally affects women between the ages of 15 and 44. This disease causes the immune system to attack the body’s own tissue, often resulting in organ damage. An estimated 1.4 million people in the U.S. suffer from the severely debilitating and often life-threatening disease.
Complications from having her second child about 10 years ago caused Caroline Dorough-Cochrane to take a turn for the worse. The family found out, after she passed away, that she had been doing things she shouldn’t have been while trying to live a normal life. Howie Dorough feels that the information provided by Veritas Medicine could have prolonged Caroline’s life and may have helped her live a more normal life. Dorough is CEO of the foundation and another sister, Angie Herring, serves as president.
