New Empires for Old

A future tale of America that's happening now!
At the dawn of the 21st century, America had found itself in a unique position as the last remaining superpower. Though there were stirrings in China and a new European Union was beginning to flex its new-found muscle, no nation could match the economic and military might of the USA.

The idea came slowly as America responded to the myriad world crises that ensued following the end of the Cold War. As her troops spread far and wide carrying with it the 'religion' of democracy, a germ of a plan began to form in the minds of the nation's leaders.

With the nations in turmoil, and so many countries in need of American economic and military support, why not a new Empire to govern the helpless masses of the world? Why not a 'New World Order' if you will.

The starting point, of course, would be the Middle East, with its vast oil reserves. Here the wealth of the earth depended on the uninterrupted flow of the lifeblood of their economies. From Europe to the far shores of Japan, here was the weak spot, the jugular.

Iraq came first. It was easily justified and swiftly done, as forces were already in place. Preparations had been undergoing for years. The conquest of the Saudis was even simpler, almost bloodless. With thousands of US military personnel within the country, a protectorate was proclaimed until the 'end of the world crisis'.

Suspicions began to rise but little could be done. America now had a knife at the throat. Russia and China could do little, as they were absorbed in rebuilding their countries from communisms' excesses.

America kept the oil flowing, for we were all allies were we not?

Palestine was next, Israel welcoming the end of her own national nightmare. Only the PLO fought back, but with their leaders either dead or forced to flee, their cause was hopeless.

The last leader of the Palestinians, his ancient body and mind worn from a lifetime of struggles and war, appealed to his former allies: Egypt, Libya, Morocco, Sudan, to no avail.

'You will be next', he prophesized.

And so it began. The official American stance was 'picking up the trash' left over from the Cold War. The Libyans were next, followed by North Korea, and that thorn in our flesh, Cuba. The swift combat brigades of the US seemed everywhere, with their Stryker tanks and heralded by swarms of new C-17 transports and older C-130 planes.

In London, the Prime Minister watched all this with mixed reaction. While her party screamed for action from the United Nations, and students demonstrated in Trafalgar Square, she was secretly glad at the restoration of order in the conquered nations. But she also wondered, 'Would we be next?'

Britain had long since ceased to be a great military power, but had been steadily rising in respectability ever since the Falklands War. If the Royal Navy could no longer challenge the American Fleet, perhaps there was another way, without using force.

She steeled herself, and requested an audience with the king, the one person in all of Britain who could support before the government and the people. The wise old man listened attentively as she outlined the idea, and she noticed a grim smile corner his lips.

Yes, she thought. He will support me. For his own reasons.

Immediately afterwards she flew to Washington, to meet with the President. At their meeting she outlined basically what she had presented to the king, though, important parts were intentionally omitted. A new alliance was formed.

The next day, before Parliament, the king addressed the nation. He began reading from a speech carefully written the day before by the Prime Minister.

'Today is a defining moment, not only for our nation, but also for the entire world. Today, the two great English-speaking nations, severed so long by culture, by ideals, and by character, have begun negotiations for the reunion of our two countries. I stand before you to announce my full and whole-hearted support in these negotiations undertaken by our Prime Minister, and ask that you, my countrymen and friends, do likewise, not only for the sake of Britain, but also for the sake of world order and peace.

And not only we, in this island, but all English nations in the Commonwealth, will join us in a giant empire of good, so vast and invincible, that no foe would dare assail us.'

At the finish, the king was greeted with a standing ovation. He had won Parliament. The people would be next. He would go among them, and then travel to the Commonwealth nations, and they too would be brought in the fold.

Then, as planned, he would journey to America, and he would become their king too. Not at first, of course, because Americans would never again accept a British monarch. He would travel among them, as Churchill had done, and become their friend. Then, when time for the treaty to signed by the Prime Minister and the President, a third party would be needed to symbolize the new Union, a figure-head so to speak.

He would however, be no figurehead. He would become EMPEROR!
