Conner protests after OneWorld progress
Sailing: OneWorld's completion of the semi-final line-up of the Louis Vuitton Cup was tinged with controversy.
The Italian yacht Prada Challenge and OneWorld of the United States have completed the semi-final line-up in the Louis Vuitton Cup, but not without controversy.
Team Dennis Conner, whitewashed 4-0 by OneWorld in their quarter-final, have protested to the international jury, alleging a breach of Rule two - fair sailing.
This latest development in the qualification series to find a challenger to the New Zealand holders for the America's Cup concerns OneWorld's alleged illegal use of design data from Team New Zealand and Prada. The protest will be heard by a five-man arbitration panel next weekend and it will issue its findings before the semi-finals on Monday week.
Team Dennis Conner, racing for the New York Yacht Club, are maintaining their training programme and modifying their yacht, Stars & Stripes. Should OneWorld be found to have breached the rules, Stars & Stripes will be reinstated to meet Prada in the semi-final.
A finding against OneWorld may even put in jeopardy all the previous results in the series. The three teams that have already been eliminated could launch fresh protests. OneWorld were penalised a point in August after admitting to having confidential design documents from Team New Zealand, Prada and America True.
The top half of the draw will be sailed between the Swiss Alinghi team and Oracle-BMW Racing. The winner of that match will head directly for the final, while the loser will meet the winner of the other match to decide the second finalist.
