Denver Decriminalises Possession of Marijuana

Denver became the first city in the US to remove all criminal and civil penalties for adults caught in possession of a small amount of marijuana.
Denver, the "mile high city", is living up to its name after it became the first city in the US to remove all criminal and civil penalties for adults caught in possession of a small amount of marijuana.

Under the measure residents over 21 years old will be allowed to possess up to an ounce of marijuana in Denver, which originally earned its nickname for its high altitude in the Rocky Mountains.

However, the move may turn out to be merely symbolic, as police will still be able to charge offenders under state and federal drug laws. Denver's new policy was supported by 54% of voters.
