Sports Politics: Government Backs Glasgow Commonwealth Games Bid
Scotland's bid to stage the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow in 2014 has received the backing of UK sports ministers.
Scotland's bid to stage the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow in 2014 yesterday received the backing of UK sports ministers, including Tessa Jowell, the culture secretary, and Richard Caborn, the minister for sport. Their support came at a meeting at the Millennium Centre, Cardiff, which was also attended by sports ministers from Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. Patricia Ferguson, the Scottish sports minister, said: "The games will showcase modern Scotland to billions of people." Jowell said the whole country would feel the benefits of the Olympic Games - "like dismantling some venues after 2012 and relocating them outside London".
