Darren Gough has returned from America with a spring in his step after learning he will not need a fourth operation on his career-threatening knee injury.
The 32-year-old Yorkshire and England fast bowler was fearing the worst last week as he prepared to travel to the United States for a consultation with specialist Richard Steadman.
But he is back in much more optimistic mood and said: "It is great news - I am really pleased.
"I thought I would have to have surgery, but the doctor said I didn't need it - just rehab."
Gough was recently forced to fly home from England's Ashes tour, having failed to recover from the long-term injury which has prevented him from bowling more than a handful of overs in the past year.
But he is now daring to hope he might even be fit for the start of next season if his rehabilitation exercises are successful.
He told Teletext: "I am not sure where I am going to go to do the work. I can't run yet - but obviously I'm pleased."
