David Blaine: Warm Temps Threaten Ice Magic
Temperatures in the 50s have threatened the latest feat of David Blaine, one in which he will be entombed in a block of ice for 62 hours.
As many in the New York area welcome some unseasonably warm temperatures, David Blaine, the world-renowned magician and escape artist, is wishing for Jack Frost’s prompt return. Blaine was scheduled to begin his latest attempt to avoid certain death today, by encasing himself in an 8 x 6 foot slab of ice (weighing more than 6 tons) for 62 hours, during which time his only contact with the outside world will be air and water through tubes. The high temperatures have begun to slowly melt the ice block, which rests conspicuously on the corner of West 44th Street and Broadway, where passersby will be able to watch Blaine throughout his ordeal.
Blaine prepared for his stay in his icy accommodations by immersing himself in ice water for up to 12 hours at a time. He will wear only cargo pants and a pair of boots during his arctic experience and he is scheduled to be removed from the ice on Wednesday evening. A team of physician’s will be on hand to constantly monitor Blaine’s condition, watching carefully for potentially fatal blood clots, frostbite, hypothermia, and muscle spasms.
Upon the presumed successful completion of this death-defying feat, Blaine plans to leap from the Brooklyn Bridge. The details of his future stunt have yet to be revealed, but promise to be exciting for anyone who watches.
