Shades Of Black For Life

Written for Black History Month on February 7, 2005. I am in the process of writing a book that will have the same title.
Shades Of Black For Life
Shades of black entwined with light
our legacy birthed over time.

Pain from shackles worn from within
we choose to laugh instead of cry.

Proud in spite of ignorance
distributed by racist whims.

You want our shades of black for life
when it's convenient for your vice.

Forty acres and a mule
we still waiting for our due.

Abolished slavery, yes you did
still we fight for the equality given.

Civil liberties, civil rights token positions
given to shades of black to suffice.

Bloodied footprints march through time
trying to keep Dr. King's dream alive.

Shades of black you'll pick and choose
which to accept, which to abuse.

Shades of black for life began
when you bought us from our kin.

Wake up shades of black for life
show your pride, hold your head high.

Our contributions are intelligent and great
keep our history from being erased.

Where we've been and how far we've come
can't be taken, we must stay strong.

Don't waste time on hate or dissension
for those who hate us will not win.

Racism and prejudice destroys only them
that believe and condone their ignorance.
