A Scottish academic and her American friend on trial in Indonesia for violating their tourist visas saw their hopes of a quick release dashed yesterday.

Proceedings were adjourned until December 19 because prosecutors said they would not be ready to present their final arguments before the judge goes on holiday.

Lesley McCulloch, 40, from Dunoon in Argyll, and Joy Sadler, 57, a nurse from Iowa, accused the prosecutors of playing with them to prolong their incarceration, which began on September 10 when soldiers detained them in Aceh province for visiting separatist-controlled villages. Ms Sadler, who is HIV-positive and was in poor health at yesterday's hearing, said she would immediately go on hunger strike and stop taking the numerous medicines flown out to her from the US.

"I'm just sick of it," she said, after their appeal to be moved from detention to house arrest was also rejected.
