Olympics: Britain to Go for 18 Golds at the London Games

Britain's athletes have been set a target of 18 gold medals at the 2012 Olympics - which would double the number won in Athens.
Britain has set a target of 18 gold medals at the London 2012 Olympics, the British Olympic Association revealed yesterday. Simon Clegg, the BOA's chief executive, said such a performance would ensure the team achieved the aim of finishing fourth in the medal table, behind the United States, Russia and China. It would mean doubling the nine golds - out of a total of 30 medals - won in Athens in 2004, which put Britain in 10th place. Lord Moynihan, the new chairman of the BOA, said it was essential that the funding of athletes for the games was in place as soon as possible. There has been speculation that the £55m currently spent on elite sports will be doubled to £110m.
