Spain reacted angrily yesterday to reports that an airport on the island of Mallorca was being used as a hub for a secret CIA operation to transport suspected Islamist terrorists around the world.

"If it were confirmed, we would be looking at very serious, intolerable deeds because they break the basic rules of treating people in a democratic legal and political system," the interior minister, José Antonio Alonso, said. His comments follow revelations that Spanish police had found that up to 43 suspected CIA operatives had arrived on private flights at Mallorca's Son Sant Joan airport.
