There was a rare piece of good news for the Japanese royal family yesterday when it was reported that the emperor and empress's only daughter is to marry a commoner.

Princess Sayako, 35, will marry Yoshiki Kuroda, a Tokyo civil servant, as early as next spring, according to the Kyodo news agency.

The couple have reportedly known each other since they were children and both graduated from Gakushuin University in Tokyo, where Mr Kuroda, 39, was a friend of the princess's elder brother, Prince Akishino.

The princess will receive 150m yen (£765,000) and start life as a commoner when she marries. Her husband will be free of the pressure to adjust to palace life that has dogged two other commoners who married into the family - Empress Michiko, who suffered a nervous breakdown, and Crown Princess Masako, who suffers from depression.
