Some things never change -- At least not yet
There are some things that haven't changed with the "New" Phoenix Coyotes; lack of scoring, ill-timed penalties and rumors, to mention a few.
Grumbling Again
Some things haven't changed as the Coyotes begin the second full month of the season. The grumbling, the lack of goal scoring, and the penalties consistent, even if nothing else has been.
And the rumors. We mustn't forget the rumors.
You thought that the trade rumors and stories about disgruntled players would stop with the departure of Jeremy Roenick and Keight Tkachuk? Silly you. The players may come and go, but the rumors live on forever. Like cockroaches after a nuclear war.
This time, it is Trevor Letowski who is rumored to be headed out of town. To Ottawa of all places. I don't know who the Sens are hiding in the locker room. It better be someone absolutely fabulous for us to give up the hardest working man on the team. How can I get a new jersey lettered to replace the enshrined Roenick sweater when they keep getting rid of my players, eh?
Another rumor circulating the streets are comments supposedly made by Sean Burke, stating that he is happy that Tkachuk and Roenick are gone and that this team is a better one without them. Of course, this story originated with the New York Post, so take it for what it's worth. And having spoken to Goalie Sean on several occasions regarding the departure of my Hockey Boy Mr. Roenick, I can state without a doubt that someone should be apologizing to our Number One Goalie for putting these nonsensical words in his mouth.
Even more interesting is the rumor about Claude Lemieux being traded back to the Devils. Or better yet, to the Flyers. Never mind the No Trade Clause. Never mind the close personal friendship with Owner Mr. Wayne Gretzky. Someone out there has stellar drugs and isn't sharing, you know what I mean?
Re-evaluating Already?
The Arizona Republic is reporting this week that Gretzky and company are "re-evaluating" the roster of the Phoenix Coyotes and are already looking to pull the trigger on some major trades. Apparently, there is some gutting still to do on this fish, a .500 hockey team that might not be up to Gretzky snuff.
Newly acquired forwards Michal Handzus and Daymond Langkow appear to be on the chopping block. Apparently Langkow wasn't exactly the replacement for Roenick that he was advertised to be. And there is even a rumor about Handzus going back to St. Louis. Does that mean we get Captain Coyote back?
The question I can't get answered is where did Shane Doan go? This was his break-out year, I was told. He was going to shine with puck hogs JR and Keith gone. This was his chance. I wanted him to prove me wrong and show me that he really could score some points without Roenick and Tkachuk feeding him the puck. Still waiting, Shane. Still waiting.
Glendale Arena Update
Another tidbit buried in the back pages of the Arizona Republic was the report that the City of Glendale is refusing to make public any financial information regarding Steve Ellman's arena project for the Phoenix Coyotes. They say that they are keeping this information secret because it may endanger Mr. Ellman's ability to attract tenants.
Aren't future tenants going to want to see financial information before committing to such a project? Will this information be kept secret from them too?
The Republic also reported that the Glendale city staff has been reduced to Xeroxing information at Ellman's offices, and are not allowed to remove any documents for review.
Does this make anyone else nervous? Am I the only one who wonders whether Portland will still end up with an NHL hockey team?
