I Refuse to Dance

A poem about non conformity.
You have told me to dance
To behold the music, to breathe in the song
To force my head to bend, my hips to sway
But as I glanced up, you saw the refusal
Bluntly echoed in my eyes, as silence ensued

The salsa is chaotic
Too fast for my whims, too slow for my brains
Even when the party goes and people dance
I alone, clung to my feet, defiant to my end
Stood still and desperate, hard with my ground

I cannot move my body
Even if your voice insists that I do
Even if people stare at me with contempt
I stand still, uncaring, strong willed, unchained
One ugly song could not make me move

But what if I refuse to believe
That the song is worth the move
Would that lessen your fondness of the song?
You can pull me up and straighten me
But what good will it do to you?

If I don’t dance, leave me be
You can’t enforce your whims upon me
You can’t bend the wind to suit your likes
If you dance, if you waltz, I will let you
In the same way leave me with my stand
