The man who killed John Lennon had his second bid for early release rejected today.

Officials denied Mark David Chapman parole on what would have been the former Beatle's 62nd birthday. The decision followed a closed hearing held yesterday.

The 47-year-old killer, who is serving 20 years to life in Attica prison near New York, will be allowed to appeal again in two years, the New York State Division of Parole said. His first appeal to be let out of jail was turned down two years ago.

Chapman shot Lennon on the steps of his Manhattan apartment building in December 1980 as the rock star and his wife, Yoko Ono, were returning from an evening recording session.

The drifter said he had heard voices in his head telling him to kill the former Beatle.
