After six
A few thoughts and musings through six weeks of the NCAA football season. A week that included a loss to a hated rival by my favorite team, my childhood team shutting out a hated rival and a man named Rex tearing up another ranked team.
Mack Brown is one of the best recruiters in the nation, but a mediocre coach at best. I've been a Chris Simms proponent throughout his rollercoaster career at Texas, but after some of those underthrown interceptions in Saturday's game against Oklahoma, I moving my foot towards my mouth.
My Longhorns still have a slight chance at the Rose Bowl. It takes a lot of help from a lot of teams, so let's not even get into it right now.
Rex Grossman and his Florida Gators are just flat out awesome. If I were a Florida fan, and I'm vehemently not, I would be extremely confident in purchasing my Rose Bowl tickets and Pasadena hotel reservations. Grossman might also want to buy a suit for a trip down to the Downtown Athletic Club later this year.
Bruce Perry is the nation's leading rusher. Who? Bruce Perry, the Maryland Terrapins sophomore running back. Maryland is atop the ACC at 5-0 (3-0 in the ACC) and Perry is running to the tune of 6.7 yards per carry. The toughest tests for Maryland still lie ahead in the form of Florida State, Georgia Tech and Clemson. Perry could end up with a Heisman Trophy and Maryland can feasibly end the year with double digit wins.
With Northwestern, Ohio State, Southern Miss, Illinois, Indiana and Michigan State left on the schedule, Joe Paterno might need to stick around at Penn State for another year to break the win record. His Nittany Lions were shutout by the Michigan Wolverines, 20-0 on Saturday.
Not that beating Oregon State is much of an accomplishment, but Washington State is solid team. The game against Stanford this week will be their first ranked test.
