Pats defeat Bills for 18th win in a row
In a sloppy game that featured a key injury to the NFL officiating staff, the Pats came away with their 18th consecutive win.
What do you get when you have a game where the head referee gets injured, both teams combine for 21 penalties for 171 yards, and a defense that sacks the opposing former QB five times in the fourth with four of those sacks happening in the last three minutes of the game?
You get last Sunday's game where the Pats played a sloppy first half, that only the Bills could not capitalize on, and once again opening the doors for the Bledsoe basher to say...
"I told you so," as my man Phil would say, and this time I would have to agree after just feeling sorry for the beating he took from the defense late in the fourth.
The defense was good enough to get the win on Sunday, but once again they gave up a lot of yardage on the ground and in the air for a total of 337 yards, with 138 of those yards coming off the Bills ground attack, which included a 34-yard sprint by their punter Brian Moorman after he botched a snap and tore off for the sidelines.
The secondary gave up long key passes across the middle once again, and CB Ty Law (3t) got flagged for illegal contact, which he should be proud of since the rule is in place mainly because of the Pats style of play over the years.
But once again, the D made big plays when needed like CB Tyrone Poole's (5 tackles) interception on the Pats 30 yard line, ILB Tedy Bruschi's (7t, 2 sackes) combined sack/forced fumble that led to DE Richard Seymour's (3t 1s) fumble recovery and 68-yard rumble to the end zone.
Other defensive players with sacks were OLB Mike Vrabel (7t) led the team in tackles and had one sack as did rookie DT Vince Wilfork (1t), ILB Roman Phifer (2t), and LB Rosie Colvin (4t).
LB Ted Johnson and FS Eugene Wilson finished high on the tackle stat with five a piece, but shows the team's weakness against the run & pass.
The offense looks stronger and stronger every week, and RB Corey Dillon (3r/23 yds) with his first rushing TD of the season (19/79 yds) is giving this team a much needed spark, but he has to hold onto the ball as he fumbled another one away.
This time on the Bills three-yard line that led to a Bills drive for a TD.
QB Tom Brady (17/30 for 298 yds) played it cool again in the pocket as his line provided him ample time to deliver the ball and not giving up any sacks.
This is where the Pats are most dangerous in my book, they have a great corps of hands from the FB position to the WR position.
A threat that will only get better when WR Deion Branch and RB Kevin Faulk return.
Right now I'm very impressed with the TE duties, despite losing rookie Ben Watson for the season, Daniel Graham (2/35 yds) is having a great year catching his fourth consecutive TD reception showing glimpses of former TE Ben Coates.
Veteran Chistian Fauria (2/24 yds) had been itching to get in and make his contribution which he did pulling down a 17-yard pass on third and short.
The WR's once again are flying below the radar throughout the league making some big receptions with breakaway yardage, and second efforts to get over the goal line as David Patten (5/113 yds 1 TD) did when he pulled down 30 yarder from Brady.
David Givens (4/86 yds) pulled down a HUGE 44 yard reception when Brady was faced with first down and 35 yards back because of sloppy penalties.
This catch kept the drive alive and set up the Dillon TD.
Bethal Johnson finished the game with one reception, but it was a 17 yarder when Brady was faced with third and ten on the Bills 32-yard line. This play also contributed to the Dillon TD.
Once again the coaching staff amazes me, but I did notice that this year the Pats aren't working the screen as much and attacking the middle because the receivers are getting open downfield.
The Pats moved the ball well in the first half, and if they didn't commit as many penalties as they did in the first half then Bills would have been an afterthought by the half with the game plan OC Charlie Weis had in effect.
DC Romeo Crennel made some adjustments during the half, and the confused the Bills once again with the "no down" lineman scheme.
A scheme that I wish the Pats would use against teams more often, and not just for Bledsoe and Manning.
The weak link in this coaching staff is special teams coach Brad Seely, his squad allowed the Bills to run back a kick return for 98 yards, and they also allowed the punter to tally off a 34 yard rush.
However, the problems isn't just defending, the Pats are not consistent in their own punt/kick return game.
This is something that needs to be addressed before they head into the games that matter.
Next week the winless Dolphins come to town, and the only thing I see them doing is dropping another game.
In my opinion, the Dolphins are without RB Ricky Williams, littered with key injuries and some mediocre QB's, and well below the cap.
This team may just be thinking about next year's draft, and more so if they drop this week to the Pats putting them in a big hole.
