Top 25 football rankings -- Week 10

It has now been three weeks without a ranked team losing. However, that did not prevent teams from changing in this week's poll.

Poly Prep, after another unimpressive 14-3 win over Wyoming Seminary, a small school in Pennsylvania that is not ranked in their state. Poly Prep moves into the "Teams to Watch" and making its Top 25 debut is Newark High out of Newark, Delaware. Newark is in the midst of a 29-game winning streak and has also won 57 out of 58 games. DeMatha Catholic also fell in the rankings, but not all the way out, after a close win.

High scores were the norm for the ranked teams this week. Out of 81 games played by teams ranked regionally (Cretin-Derham Hall, a Team to Watch, played twice last week), 52 of those games saw the winners score over 40 points, including 128 points in the two games for Cretin-Derham Hall.

In one instance, the scoreboard operator was busy putting up lots of points on both sides of the scoreboard. Chatfield was on the road to take on Smoky Hill. The final score was 67-48 in favor of Chatfield. But, the score is just the beginning of the eye-popping numbers in this game. Chatfield had 724 yards of total offense; both teams combined for 1,232 yards. There were 48 first downs in the game. There were even eight turnovers, none of which was immediately returned for a touchdown. Chatfield's star running back Lendale White began the game with 886 yards rushing for the season, with 15 touchdowns. Four quarters later, he had season totals of 1,224 yards and 21 touchdowns. The game was as close as 46-41 early in the fourth quarter before two long touchdowns by White and a 73-yard run on a reverse by wideout Tyler Holden finally put Smoky Hill away.

And now here is this week's Top 25:

1. De La Salle, Concord, CA (7-0) Last Week: 1 Result: The good news for Brentwood Liberty was that De La Salle quarterback Matt Gutierrez completed only seven passes. The bad news was that Gutierrez only attempted eight passes, and of the seven completions, three of them went for touchdowns. Maurice Drew and Gino Ottoboni each scored two times. The 65-0 win extends the Spartans' national record winning streak to 120 consecutive wins.

2. Jenks, Jenks, OK (8-0) Last Week: 2 Result: At one point, Jenks had snapped the ball three times in the game. All three times, Jenks scored a touchdown. That easy 21-0 lead at the beginning propelled Jenks to a 63-14 victory over Muskogee. Jason Carter led Jenks with three touchdowns, two coming via the ground and one via punt return.

3. West Monroe, West Monroe, LA (9-0) Last Week: 3 Result: West Monroe overwhelmed Captain Shreve 42-0 in a game that could have had a much worse score. Demario Taylor ran for 186 yards and two scores on only nine carries. West Monroe will play for their district title next week against Monroe Ouachita, also with an undefeated district record.

4. Woodland Hills, Pittsburgh, PA (9-0) Last Week: 4 Result: Ibrahim Halsey from Elizabeth High has some company when it comes to players who can do everything. Woodland Hills QB Steve Breaston did the following in the Wolverines' 42-19 victory over Penn Hills. Breaston ran for 153 yards on 12 carries, including a 53-yard touchdown scamper. He also was thtee-for-three passing for 55 yards and a touchdown. Finally, Breaston ran back a punt 62 yards for a score.

5. Glades Central, Belle Glades, FL (9-0) Last Week: 5 Result: Hallandale jumped out to an early 6-0 lead on the Raiders. However, the Raiders came back with 19 unanswered points to knock off Hallandale 19-6. This week Glades Central looks to extend their winning streak to 45 consecutive regular season games as they play against Pahokee in one of the best-named football games of all-time - the Muck Bowl.

6. Independence, Charlotte, NC (9-0) Last Week: 6 Result: Junior quarterback Chris Leak continues to show why he is one of the top underclassman quarterbacks in the country, throwing for 339 yards on 22-for-32 passing with five touchdowns in a 61-6 blowout win over Central Cabarrus. One of Leak's touchdown passes went to Mario Raley, which allowed Raley to set a state record with his 44th career touchdown reception. Mario Crowe ran for 105 yards on 11 carries and scored three touchdowns, two on the ground.

7. Harrison, Farmington Hills, MI (9-0) Last Week: 7 Result: Fowlerville became another pretender for an upset bid against Harrison, as they fell 49-7 in the first round of the Michigan Division 3 playoffs. Marcus Woods ran for 109 yards and four touchdowns on 11 carries, while QB Drew Stanton added 105 yards on the ground and two more touchdowns. Harrison gets a 10-0 Chelsea squad at home in second round play.

8. Colerain, Cincinnati, OH (10-0) Last Week: 8 Result: The Cardinals had another superior defensive effort in knocking off Cincinnati LaSalle by the score of 38-0. Maurice Johnson ran for 86 yards and two touchdowns, which doesn't seem all that impressive. Then add in the fact that Johnson only touched the ball four times and it becomes a very impressive accomplishment. Colerain takes on Hamilton in the first round of district playoff action this Saturday. Colerain already owns a 52-21 win over Hamilton in September.

9. Hoover, Hoover, AL (9-0) Last Week: 9 Result: There was no letdown for Hoover, as they dismantled Birmingham Woodlawn 56-0. Blake Davidson was 11-for-18 for 141 yards and two touchdowns and the defense returned an interception and a blocked field goal for a score.

10. St. Thomas Aquinas, Ft. Lauderdale, FL (9-0) Last Week: 10 Result: For the second straight week, the Raiders appeared to be in a dogfight. Unlike the previous week, Aquinas came back with a vengeance. After Port St. Lucie kicked a field goal to start the scoring, the Raiders scored 38 points to take a 38-3 lead after one quarter. They then rolled to a 64-3 victory, setting a school record for points scored. David Marrero ran for two scores and ran back a kickoff 88 yards for a third touchdown.

11. Ben Davis, Indianapolis, IN (11-0) Last Week: 11 Result: The Giants held Southport to 52 yards of total offense as they won 48-0. Garrett Phillips had 121 yards on 15 carries with two scores. The sectional finals are next for Ben Davis as they travel to play Decatur Central on Friday.

12. Chatfield, Littleton, CO (9-0) Last Week: 12 Result: Needless to say, the streak of shutouts that Chatfield had ended at two games in their 67-48 win. 14. Elizabeth, Elizabeth, NJ (7-0) Last Week: 14 Result: Ibrahim Halsey ran for 159 yards rushing, and would have had a lot more had three touchdowns not been called back due to penalties. 15. Hazelwood East, St. Louis, MO (9-0) Last Week: 15 Result: A balanced attack led the Spartans over St. Louis Beaumont 33-8. Dwayne Buchanan threw for 132 yards on four completions, while Brian Trauterman kicked three field goals for Hazelwood East.

18. Blue Springs, Blue Springs, MO (8-0) Last Week: 19 Result: Blue Springs had an easy time with Lee's Summit North, 40-0. Justin Whitworth threw for two scores and Andrew Tuggle ran for two scores and 169 yards. Arch-rival Blue Springs South is this week's opponent for the Wildcats.

19. Kahuku, Kahuku, HI (9-0) Last Week: 20 Result: Kahuku's passing game was pretty much shut down due to horrible weather conditions, but Mulivai Pula ran for 111 yards on just nine carries, scoring all three Red Raiders' touchdowns in a 21-6 win over Waianae. Kahuku begins their state championship quest against Roosevelt this week.

20. Southeast, Lincoln, NE (9-0) Last Week: 21 Result: Five players scored touchdowns for the Knights, paced by Michael Ritchie, who ran for 124 yards as Lincoln Southeast beat Columbus 37-14. They begin their playoffs this week with a first round matchup against Lincoln Northeast.

They take on Champlin Park in the Section 7 Class 5A final, with Blaine already owning a 32-20 victory on September 21.
