Parenting Plus Prayer: Perfect Pairing

A single parent often has little free time and much to juggle, but prayer is one of the most important tasks to keep on the agenda, according to Dr. David Albert Farmer, author of the brand new Pilgrim Press release, PILGRIM PRAYERS FOR SINGLE FATHERS. A single dad himself for twelve years, Farmer—a college professor and a clergyperson—believes that single fathers have special needs and challenges and, thus, that support materials should be available especially for them, rather than assuming single dads can find what they need in general parenting literature or in books and articles for a group Farmer greatly admires, single mothers.

Growing out of real life experiences, ranging from somber to hilarious, Farmer has written chapters built around thirty nonsectarian prayers—each complimented by a brief story set in real life, an instructive passage from Hebrew and/or Christian scripture, and excerpts from companion issues in classic and modern literature as well as in the news media. He expects that the prayers he has written may be used by readers, gay and straight, as their own prayers on occasion, but more often his hope is that his prayers will serve as springboards for readers who will then verbalize their own deeply personal and personalized prayers as they commune with the God whom Farmer assures them loves them just as they are.

In addition, the author has written helpful sections on how to as well as how not to pray. Readers are certain to be encouraged and affirmed as they learn to care more creatively for their children and for themselves in closeness to God.

David Albert Farmer earned a Ph.D. degree, is author of four books and has been editor of two professional journals including THE AFRICAN AMERICAN PULPIT, which he founded. Presently, he is Pastor of the Silverside Church in Wilmington, Delaware, and Adjunct Professor of Humanities at Wilmington College. In addition, he is General Editor of the annual New Interpreter’s Volume from Abingdon Press, THE PASTOR’S BIBLE STUDY.
