Detroit Lions are still perfect at 0 and 6
The Lions have not started this bad since 1955. They continue to struggle and find new ways to lose week after week. New coaches and management have only made it worse.
So, there is parity in the NFL. Any team can beat any other team on any given Sunday.
Yeah sure, tell that to the Detroit Lion fans.
How can any team in this day of the salary cap be winless at this point of the season?
The Lions' personnel are not the best in the league by any means, but not the worst either. Yet, they are still 0 and 6 going into the month of November. Why?
First of all, Marty Mornhinweg and Matt Millen have to take much of the blame. Drafting two offensive lineman with the first two picks they had was not real innovative. The team needs impact players. Offensive lineman do not impact a game.
The Chicago Bears drafted impact players in David Terrell and Anthony Thomas, and they are 5-1 with major contributions from both of them.
The new attitude that was supposed to be brought in by the M&M boys has not come about. The players are just as undisciplined as they were under all the other coaches in the past. Actually, Wayne Fontes did a better job of getting his team ready to play.
Mornhinweg just blames it all on his players. He thinks they are stupid, or they aren't getting any breaks, or they need to make the big plays.
Marty, you need to get a better game plan and not give up early big plays that put your team in the catch-up mode right away.
Millen does not say too much about what is happening probably because he is embarrassed, as he should be.
One thing the Lions have improved on is making the games more exciting to watch. They don't just lie down and give up. However, the bottom line is, the Lions still lose.
They had a perfect chance this Sunday to get a win. They were playing at home against an improved, but still average, Cincinnati Bengal team. The Bengals did what they could to lose the game, but the Lions did the usual to make sure that the home crowd would go away disappointed. Bad penalties, inaccurate passes, poor tackling, and giving up big plays doomed the Lions.
It doesn't get any easier for the Lions as they travel to San Francisco to play the 49ers next week.
Can the Lions keep penalty yardage under 100 yards? Can they even cover Terrell Owens? Do they have a game plan to carry them to a victory? Can Charlie Batch throw the ball more consistently? If not, can Mornhinweg come up with more excuses why the Lions lost? We will find out next Sunday.
As far as I am concerned, this season is over for the Lions. They are now playing for a draft pick. But, given what they did last draft, offensive lineman in college will be waiting by their phone when the Lions make their pick.
Wake up Millen and Mornhinweg! It is time to cut the guys who make the stupid penalties. Players who have no heart need to be released. The Lions need big play guys who can turn a game around.
William Clay Ford, Sr. hired a general manager with no previous experience to hire a coach and run a team with average talent and make them winners. Millen has shown his inexperience by hiring a coach with no head coaching experience in the NFL and not making roster changes to get players with winning attitudes.
Batch has still not proven to be a winner in the NFL. The defense struggles every week. Desmond Howard still can return kicks with the best of them, but can't be expected to be the only catalyst on the team.
So what can Lion fans do for the rest of the NFL season?
I plan on rooting for them to lose, so they can get a high draft choice. Rebuilding is not something the Lions are in a position to do. The offense and defense has veterans that should be making the plays necessary to win. The players are not doing their jobs like they should. The coaches and general manager are not performing as they should either.
The good thing is that it can't get any worse. There is always next year. Of course, Lion fans have been saying that for more than 30 years.
