SOCCER: WUSA-It's Grrreeeaaaat!
The Queen of All Things that are baseball and women's basketball is so very excited about....women's professional soccer!
I keep going back to the webpage womenssoccer.com and clicking on the "WUSA" link. I never thought that I could be so excited about a sport that when I was a child, didn't interest me.(to be honest)
When I was younger (yikes, younger, I am just going to be 19!) I played soccer...for about 2 years. It conflicted with my baseball schedule, and frankly, I didn't find all the running around enjoyable.
Now, I'm a fan of all sports, and the World Cup win for the women's national team in 1999 confirmed, that there is this little place in my heart for soccer.
One of my good friends Steph, plays in high school. She has to be one of the most talented players I've seen, with skills that far outreach her years. I always told her that should could make the Olympic team, and her answer would always be "I'm not good enough" Even playing in college, and not being able to go further than that, I thought her plethora of talent was just going to be wasted.
Not anymore!
With the formation of the WUSA, little girls can dream of a career in professional soccer, right here on their home turf. Those women they look up to(and rightly so) get to finally play at home as well.
My friend Steph now has a great oppurtunity!
People question how succesful this league will be. I could never question it. Look at the number of fans who PACKED the Rose Bowl in the summer of 1999. It is an opportunity for mothers to go with daughters and fathers to build a better relationship with their young girls.
The WNBA has had great success, and will only get better. The same can be said for the Women's Professional Softball League, with the National Team's second straight Olympic gold.
All I can say, is that I cannot wait until the season starts.
But I do have one complaint, now Kristine Lilly grew up in Wilton, Connecticut, about 10 minutes from me-why is she playing with Boston and not New York! LOL-any team that has her is lucky!
Go women, Go soccer, GO WUSA!!
