Rugby Union: Wales to Vet Books By Players Following Henson's Revelations
Stung by Gavin Henson's controversial autobiography, the Welsh Rugby Union will carefully scrutinize books written by Wales internationals from now on.
Current Wales internationals who write books will have to submit their manuscripts for approval by the Welsh Rugby Union as a consequence of Gavin Henson's autobiography, which caused a rumpus when it was published earlier this month.
The Wales and Lions centre Henson upset the Wales management by relating tales which it believed should have remained in-house and a number of players, including the captain Gareth Thomas, are reported to be annoyed with some of the book's contents. "We used to have a system where books were vetted but Gavin's slipped through the net," said the team manager Alan Phillips. "That will not happen again. We are meeting with the senior players next week to draw up a protocol." Henson has signed a two-book deal with his publishers, Harper Collins.
The 23-year-old will miss Wales's four autumn internationals with a groin injury. Henson was one of four summer Lions, with the flanker Ryan Jones, the prop Gethin Jenkins and the centre Tom Shanklin, who were left out of the Wales squad announced yesterday because of injuries. The half-backs Stephen Jones and Dwayne Peel will need to prove their fitness in the Heineken Cup this weekend; otherwise they are unlikely to be considered for the game against the All Blacks. on November 5.
The only uncapped player in the 30- man squad is the Llanelli Scarlets' 25-year-old full-back Lee Byrne. Worcester's prop Chris Horsman was banned for three weeks by the Rugby Football Union for stamping in a club match against Leeds but will be added to the squad as the ban still allows him to play against the All Blacks. Horsman admitted the offence in a hearing in Bristol. New Zealand have replaced the injured fly-half Luke McAlister with Nick Evans.
