Bedazzled: Elizabeth Hurley Treated Harshly at Movie Premiere
Amid the celebration of her new film "Bedazzled," Elizabeth Hurley was harangued by striking Screen Actors Guild members who felt betrayed.
The current strike, which has now lasted for over 5 months, is the Guild's attempt to change the way actors are compensated for cable and Internet advertisements. Hurley, who made a non-union perfume ad during the strike, has repeatedly apologized for her actions, stating that she was unaware of the strike when she made the ad. She has also pledged $25,000 to the Guild and her attorney has emphatically stated that "She has apologized for this numerous times and been really embarrassed over this. She really wants to put this behind her." Hurley is an Estee Lauder model and has been in the news recently for her breakup with former boyfriend Hugh Grant.
As she made her way to the premiere, a group of more than 20 disgruntled actors held up signs that read "ugly scab" and "Elizabeth Scably, you make me hurl."
In related news, Wendy's chairman Dave Thomas has come under fire by the Screen Actor's Guild for shooting new commercials during the strike. "We're very disappointed in Dave Thomas," notes Bobbi Hughes, the head of Screen Actors Guild's Las Vegas office. Speaking on behalf of Thomas, Wendy's representative Bob Bertini said that Thomas felt he had a greater obligation to the employees of Wendy's than to the Guild. Because of the non-union commercial production, Thomas could be banned from the Screen Actor's Guild for life.
But Thomas and Wendy's are not the only big firms caught up in the strike. Members of the Guild shut down a Ford Motor Co. vehicle assembly plant in Chicago for several hours last week when truck drivers who were delivering parts honored the picket line.
