Ranting and Raving about the NFL...

If you're a Jaguars fan, Jeff Fisher holds a special place in your heart. He made "friends" with everyone in Jacksonville when he stated Alltel Stadium was like a second home to the Titans. It seems Fisher still has a knack for stirring up the blood of Jaguar fans. This and more in this week's Rants and Raves.
Ranting and raving...

If you're a Jaguars fan, Tennessee Titan's head coach Jeff Fisher holds a special place in your heart. He made "friends" with everyone in Jacksonville when he stated Alltel Stadium was like a second home to the Titans.

It seems Fisher still has a knack for stirring up the blood of Jaguar fans.

In Fisher's Monday press conference, he took time out to send a little jab Jacksonville's way.

When asked about playing Jacksonville twice in three weeks, Fisher stated, "There's been years past where we've played a divisional opponent close like that and it was Jacksonville in fact. You just go out and do everything you can this week to give yourself a chance to win with your scheme. Fortunately for us, we have a bye week in between there so to get ready for them the next time. We'll look at what was good and what was not good and change some things and perhaps not change some things. The big thing for us this week is that we just keep chopping wood."

The "chopping wood" reference was to Jacksonville's kicker Chris Hanson's injury while chopping on a log Jaguars Coach Jack Del Rio had installed in the locker room as a motivational aid. The injury cost Hanson the season and Jacksonville a very talented punter.

...and raving...

Once again an NFL official has caused a controversy over the easiest part of any football game -- the coin toss.

After Phil Luckett's 1999 Thanksgiving day debacle, the NFL changed the rules of the coin toss. Teams are now required to state whether they want heads or tails before they even flip the coin.

The league made a good decision with their rule change. Theoretically there should be no more coin toss controversies.

Notice, I said theoretically? You have to remember there are referees involved in the coin toss so here we are again, staring another coin toss controversy in the face.

In Sunday's Dolphins-Patriots game, the referee, Gerry Austin, seemingly botched the coin toss. Austin insists he made the correct call.

"I asked the Patriots who was going to call it," Austin told an NFL pool reporter. "Patriots quarterback Tom Brady said he was. I said, What's your call, and he said, tails. I tossed it and it landed heads. They looked at it and said, That's tails.

"I don't know what the confusion was ... but they were declaring it was tails when Lady Columbia was clearly showing. That's not tails."

Luckily, this coin toss did not determine the outcome of the game. Each team had two possessions before Patriots QB Tom Brady hit Troy Brown for an 82 yard, game winning touchdown.

...and still raving...

I watched what I believe to be the most entertaining game of the season yet played. The undefeated K.C. Chiefs took on the Oakland Raiders (2-4)... in Oakland on Monday night.

Based on each team's record, this game looked to be a wash for Kansas City. After all, they are undefeated.

However, one fact needs to be brought to light. The Raiders are the all time winningest team on Monday Night Football. Add to this home field and you had the makings of a great gamem, and the Chiefs and Raiders did not fail to deliver.

With KC leading 20-13, the Raiders received the ball with 1:47 to play and no time outs. This did not slow the Raiders as they rallied and moved the ball down field. The play ended with a Marques Tuiasosopo pass to Tim Brown, who was taken down the Chiefs' one-yard line as time expired.

All football games should end like that. A final drive with time running out, attempting to force the game into overtime. I was on the edge of my seat. Now that's entertainment.

...and done!
