NCAA: College Football Preview Weekend Of October 21
By Jason Brandt
This week in College Football is one of those where we get to take a breath as far as the Orange Bowl hopefuls go. Oklahoma and Florida have bye weeks and Nebrasks (vs. Baylor), Miami (vs. Temple) and Florida St (vs. Virginia) really have byes also. There are some intriguing games this week to watch and try to predict.
1. #2 Virginia Tech at Syracuse- Syracuse is really not all that good, but as far as tests go in the Big Least I guess this qualifies. The dome is a tough place to play when a tough team plays there and that is not the case this year. I’m so glad to hear Michael Vick is going to come back next year because I just need to hear some more hype on this guy. Look for many highlight reel plays from Vick and a close game at the half. Much like W. Virginia last week, the Hokies will wear down the Orangemen in the second half. Virginia Tech 38 Syracuse 14
2. #20 Arizona at #11 Oregon- Oregon blew my theory last week and won a Pac-10 road game. Does that mean I now go the opposite way and pick the road teams in the conference? Not if the game is in Eugene, Oregon. This is about as big as home field gets. The quack attack has folks going crazy up there. Oregon 41 Arizona 20
3. #14 Mississippi St. at LSU- On paper, this really should not be that close of a game. This is the same LSU team that got killed by the Florida team the Bulldogs beat, but strange things tend to happen in night games in the bayou. Just ask Tennessee and last year’s Arkansas team. I think the Bulldog defense will show up in this one and make life difficult for LSU as they continue their march to Atlanta for the SEC title game. MSU 27 LSU 17
4. #17 Purdue at Wisconsin- Not many people realize that this Wisconsin team gave #11 Oregon it’s only loss this year, maybe that is because they have lost their last two at home to fall off everyone’s radar screen. I just can’t see them losing three straight in Madison. I liken Drew Brees’ Heisman campaign to Ross and Rachel from Friends, it is really on again, off again. I expect it to be off this week. Wisconsin 34 Purdue 24
5. #18 Oregon St. at #24 UCLA- I really wish more people got to see Ken Simonton of OSU run the ball more than the do. This kid will playing on Sundays. This should be a great game for fans to watch and defensive coordinators to burn. I expect a great deal on the ground from the Beavers and in the air from the Bruins. I will finally go with a road team in the Pac- 10. I think Dennis Erickson is doing a great job. Oregon St. 41 UCLA 27
6. Texas A & M at Iowa St.- This Iowa St. is probably the best team in America no one has even thought about. They were leading Nebraska at halftime and come into this game 5-1 on the verge of their first bowl bid in an awful long time. The excitement will be incredible in Ames this week and I think the Cyclones will go bowling. This team has a chance to end up 9-2 this year. I don’t think it will happen, but I think it would be great. ISU 31 Texas A & M 20
I’m just hoping to get one right this week. I’ll see you Monday with a summary.
