A frozen body, believed to be that of a US airman who crashed his plane during the second world war, has been hacked out of a glacier in the Sierra Nevada mountains.

The body was flown to a laboratory in California still packed in ice. It was found by climbers last weekend. As the body thaws forensic pathologists are building a picture of a fair-haired man in an army uniform who was wearing his military parachute when he perished.

Military investigators believe he may have been part of the crew of a navigational training plane that crashed in November 1942.
