De Niro Diagnosed With Cancer
Academy Award-winning actor Robert De Niro has been diagnosed with prostate cancer but is expected to make a full recovery, his spokesman said yesterday.
Stan Rosenfield said in a statement that doctors for the 60-year-old De Niro had caught the cancer at an early stage during a regular health check-up within the past week.
He added that De Niro was in otherwise excellent physical condition and would go ahead with his next film, Hide and Seek, which shoots early next year, but declined to give further details of the actor's condition or course of treatment.
"He's a private person and doesn't care to have his treatment out for public consumption," he said.
De Niro, a New York native, shot to prominence in Martin Scorsese's 1973 film Mean Streets and has appeared in more than 60 movies during a 40-year career, including Taxi Driver, The Deer Hunter, Cape Fear and more recently Analyze This (1999) and Meet The Parents (2000).
He has been nominated for Oscars on six occasions and won twice - as best actor in 1981 for Raging Bull and best supporting actor for The Godfather, Part II in 1975.
