Preview - San Antonio Spurs
After being swept by L.A. in the Western Conference Finals, San Antonio needs to re-focus and play with passion.
San Antonio Spurs
2000 Record: (58-24), Midwest Division Champions
Player Losses: Derek Anderson, Avery Johnson, Steve Kerr, Samaki Walker, Jaren Jackson, Derrick Dial, Shawnelle Scott
Player Additions: Steve Smith, Bruce Bowen, Cherokee Parks, Mark Bryant, Tony Parker
Projected Starting Five:
Center - David Robinson (7'1" 250 lbs.)
Forward - Tim Duncan (7'0" 260 lbs.)
Forward - Bruce Bowen (6'7" 200 lbs.)
Guard - Steve Smith (6'8" 220 lbs.)
Guard - Antonio Daniels (6'4" 205 lbs.)
The Spurs lost Derek Anderson, but got Steve Smith in return, which may be a better fit for this offense. Smith has the ability to hit the three on a consistent basis and he is also known to be an excellent passer. They will make up for Anderson's defensive skills with Bruce Bowen, who is considered one of the best defenders in the league. Let's also not forget that the Spurs still have the best center-power forward combo in the league in Tim Duncan and David Robinson. San Antonio is still the favorite to win the Midwest Division, but what they really want is another shot at the Lakers in the playoffs. The Spurs have the ability to beat the Lakers, but only time will tell if they can pull it off.
