Mauresmo fears season is over

Amélie Mauresmo hobbled out of the Swisscom Challenge yesterday without hitting a ball, withdrawing from the event with a knee injury which could spell the end of her season.

The Frenchwoman has had an outstanding year, winning two titles and reaching the semi-finals at Wimbledon and the US Open, but if the cartilage damage in her knee proves as serious as she fears she may miss the year-end WTA Championships in two weeks' time

"I was practising with my coach and I felt something like a knife going into my knee," said Mauresmo, who will undergo tests in the next few days to assess the problem.

Kim Clijsters fared better, demolishing Amanda Coetzer 6-1, 6-1 and continuing her rich seam of form after winning the title in Filderstadt on Sunday. She plays Lindsay Davenport next.

Daniela Hantuchova joined Clijsters and Davenport in the last eight, but only just. The world No9 saved four match points in a three-hour epic before beating Elena Dementieva 3-6, 7-6, 7-6.
