Incredible just desserts
By Chris Dachille CPKSports.com Associate Editor
When you want an ice cream sundae, I mean really want an ice cream sundae, you want to do it up right, right? So you pile on the ice cream, chocolate sauce, whipped cream, nuts and a cherry (for the ladies). And sometimes that's not good enough either. Maybe you want a couple cookies, a candy bar or other sundry items. The point is, when you want dessert, you want it fast and done right.
Like the Yankees in baseball over the last four years.
The three time defending champions battled back to defeat Oakland Monday night, winning 5-3 and escaping the A's for the second straight year, nabbing the series 3-2. They were down in the series two games to nothing. So what? They were down in game five 2-0 with a hurt Roger Clemens on the mound. So what?
They won. Emphatically. And even got to throw in one of those razzle dazzle catches by Derek Jeter in the top of the 8th inning. Off a pop up from the bat of Terrance Long, Jeter made his way down the left field line. He flipped over the railing to fall in with the fans at the same time making a catch we will see for years to come. (Matter of fact, it'll replace his great defensive play now showing on the mlb.com commercial.)
Then Mariano Rivera, a man who gets more respect behind home plate than any pitcher in the history of baseball, received his obligatory strike out calls to end the game. The umpire behind home plate when Rivera is pitching is akin to that nerd who really wants to talk with Susie at the high school dance and will do anything to get her attention.
And the funny thing is, this is only the first round of the playoffs. The Seattle Mariners will face the Yankees in a rematch of last year's ALCS. The Mariners were down 1-0 and 2-1 in games to the Cleveland Indians in their ALDS, but supplied the timely hitting their ball club has produced all summer long.
Now, the challenge begins.
Can the Mariners, baseball's best team in the history of American League play, beat the Yankees? Can anybody beat the Yankee?
Stop reading this drivel and watch the ballgames.
I'll save you a scoop of vanilla.
