NCAA: Lucky 7

The seventh week of the NCAA football season left its mark and answered some questions while creating a handful of them in the process.
Props and knocks to e-sports writer Joey Ware. First off, great call on Washington. For those that missed it, Ware wrote: "Washington is a fraud and won't finish very well. Three of their four victories were by a total of 11 points. Two of those games were at home. You heard it here first."

After getting crushed by UCLA on Saturday, the Huskies will start their demise that will conclude with two thrashings from in state foe Washington State and the Hurricanes of Miami in a November 24th make-up game that was scheduled for the weekend of the terrorist attacks. I did hear it from Ware first and kudos to him on that call.

Knocks for discrediting the Fresno State of the east in Maryland. Despite just 49 yards from star running back Bruce Perry, just 20 yards more than quarterback Shaun Hill, the Terrapins from Maryland shocked many with their 20 to 17 overtime victory against the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets.

In the same article discussing the Huskies, Ware says: "Despite opening 5-0, Maryland will still end up with four losses." The remainder of the schedule for the Terps is Duke, Florida State, Troy State, Clemson and N.C. State. I do not see four losses in that schedule. In fact, I see great potential for a run of the table en route to an 11-0 season. However, I will say that the Terps will end 10-1.

Last week I said, "Rex Grossman and his Florida Gators are just flat out awesome. If I were a Florida fan, and I'm vehemently not, I would be extremely confident in purchasing my Rose Bowl tickets and Pasadena hotel reservations. Grossman might also want to buy a suit for a trip down to the Downtown Athletic Club later this year." Does it matter if I put the right foot or left foot in my mouth? I hope those tickets are refundable!

With nothing being certain and clear cut this season, there could very well be a team with a loss atop the final BCS rankings. Florida took their hit this weekend, Texas and Michigan already lost, too. Nebraska and Oklahoma could very well meet twice, the first being in late October and the second being a rematch in the Big XII Championship game. A split takes care of them, but Miami has to face Virginia Tech and Washington to close out the season. A win against the Hokies and then a loss to Washington gives each a notch in the loss column. Oregon State will come to play against hated rival Oregon and could spoil their Rose Bowl hopes. Washington State and/or Oregon could knock off UCLA, who are now without top receiver, Brian Poli-Dixon, for three weeks. This doesn't even include the potential of super upsets, i.e. Auburn-Florida. Fresno State will, in my opinion, end up undefeated, but I am not sure they would end up first or second in the BCS, sadly, because of strength of schedule (or lack thereof) and lack of respect. I'll admit, it would take quite a bit for all these top teams to knock each other around, but it is certainly within the realm of possibilities.

Five of the top running backs in the nation are underclassmen. Perry (Maryland, SO), Mewelde Moore (Tulane, SO), William Green (Boston College, JR), Anthony Davis (Wisconsin, FR), and Chance Kretschmer (Nevada, FR) will definitely provide excitement in college backfields for years to come despite the departure of top backs such as DeShaun Foster, Damien Anderson, Travis Stephens, and Chester Taylor.

At least Joe Paterno didn't have to suffer a loss this past weekend. No, he didn't break the record, he and his Nittany Lions of Penn State were idle Saturday as they prepare to travel to Evanston, Illinois for a battle against Northwestern.

Texas avoided a let down after last week's debacle in Dallas against Oklahoma. The Longhorns destroyed the Oklahoma State Cowboys by a score of 45-17. Chris Simms re-asserted himself as he threw for a career high five touchdowns while running for another, but once again, it was against a less than stellar opponent. This week he gets another chance to show he can respond in the pressure packed game as Colorado comes to Austin on Saturday. He will respond as the Horns will defeat the Buffs 31-17.
