Displaying a heretofore hidden scope to their talents, celebrities such as Hugh Grant, Justin Timberlake and Dannii Minogue have donated photos they have taken themselves to a charity auction, Fashion Acts, to raise money for HIV/Aids sufferers.

More than 40 names familiar to readers of gossip and fashion magazines have contributed two works each, one of which will be auctioned in London next month. The other will be displayed in Selfridges store in the capital for a week before being sold.

Fashion Acts is a charity set up by members of the fashion industry in the UK to assist HIV and Aids sufferers.

Some of the photographs are unsurprising in their choice of subject matter: the rock singer Bryan Adams, whose photography appears to be taking precedence over his singing, and who last year donated a portrait photograph of the Queen and Prince Philip to the Prince's Trust, has contributed a photo of the model Linda Evangelista.

Similarly, Mario Testino's portraits of Kate Winslet are a simple pairing of photographer and subject. However Nigella Lawson suggests an unexpected and more surreal bent with her contributions. A photograph of some freshly washed cutlery, and another of just-baked cup cakes, display colours so bright they are more reminiscent of the harshly satirical portraits by the photographers Martin Parr and David LaChappelle than what one might expect from the seemingly benign domestic goddess.

More intriguing yet is Jerry Hall's contribution of a portrait of herself, taken by the veteran photographer John Swannell, in which the Texan former model has become Botticelli's Venus. Why she is depicted clutching an Evian bottle to her face is not explained.

Members of the fashion world taking part include the designers Julien Macdonald and Matthew Williamson, and Sex and the City's favourite stiletto purveyor, Manolo Blahnik.

The auction will take place at Bonham's on November 5.
