About 500 Balinese stormed the Indonesian island's main prison yesterday, demanding the immediate execution of three Islamic militants on death row for their part in the 2002 bombing that killed 202 people.

The demonstrators destroyed the main gate but police stopped them from entering the building. The three men had been moved off the island the previous day as the authorities feared the protests might turn more violent.

The locals' anger has erupted since three bombs exploded on October 1, killing 23 people. The crowd eventually dispersed peacefully.
