UN Warns Europe Not to Give Up Asylum Role
The UN high commissioner for refugees, António Guterres, yesterday warned Europe not to shirk its responsibility to shelter asylum seekers, after the EU approved a plan to offer financial support to refugee camps in Tanzania and Ukraine.
Mr Guterres supported the plan but said that Europe should not abandon its role as the "continent of asylum". Speaking at a meeting of EU interior ministers, he added: "It is very important that we are able to fight what we see as a rising intolerance in modern society ... Refugees are not terrorists - they are the victims of terror."
