Five immigrants from sub-Saharan Africa, who died as they tried to cross into the Spanish north African enclave of Ceuta on Thursday, were shot, Spanish media reported yesterday.

Autopsies on two bodies showed gunshot wounds. Spanish state news agency EFE reported that the autopsies showed the bullets were fired from the Moroccan side of the border. Spanish police denied shooting live rounds at the 500 immigrants who had stormed the border fence. Spanish media reported that 60 more immigrants had tried, but failed, to cross in Ceuta yesterday.
