Referees relegated after play-off protest
Steve Ganson and Steve Cross, the referee and video referee who were criticised by both coaches after Saturday night's Super League play-off between Wigan and Castleford, have not been appointed for this weekend's big matches.
Ganson drops down to the Northern Ford Premiership semi-final between Leigh and Batley, with Bob Connolly promoted to the Super League. But a Rugby Football League spokesman insisted that Stuart Cummings, the technical director, was "perfectly happy" with Ganson and Cross's performances.
The league has also confirmed that it will hold an official inquiry into Lee Jackson's controversial try in Friday night's play-off at Leeds, when Hull's Great Britain hooker hid a spare ball behind his back before scoring with it direct from a quick tap penalty.
Chris McKenna, the Cronulla centre who will join Leeds next season, has been dropped from Australia's squad for their Test against New Zealand in Wellington on October 12.
Warrington have released six players, including Dave Alstead, who has been a first-team regular this season, and the Papua New Guinea international Tommy O'Reilly. St Helens have not renewed the contract of their chief executive Brian Kelly.
