Joe Millionaire: Cheapskate?

Fox’s Joe Millionaire premiered Monday, thrusting 28-year old Evan Marriott into the public eye – for better or for worse.
The premise behind Joe Millionaire is similar to that of The Bachelor in which 20 single women are "wined and dined" by a "handsome, young, eligible man who has recently inherited $50 million and is looking for someone to share his newfound wealth." But there is a catch…the finalist will have a surprise on the last episode. The surprise is that the newly rich Joe is really a working class guy with a construction worker’s paycheck, putting a twist on the age-old question – for love or money?

With the Monday premier, Marriott is now in the public eye. According to California police records, Marriott was cited last September for "toll evasion" in Irvine, CA. The pseudo-millionaire was trying to avoid paying a mere $2.50. Even on a salary of $19,000, you would think the $2.50 would have been worth the potential trouble. Instead, Evan ended up with a $104 fine for his creative driving.

Marriott is quick to point out that "everybody had a good time" during the filming of the show. According to Marriott, "That was the goal. The girls, whether they were picked or not picked, had a good time." Can he be so sure after lying to these 20 "lucky" ladies? The first episode introduced Evan to all 20 ladies and the claws came out when they were told that 8 of them would be immediately eliminated. The next show, airing next Monday, will further eliminate 7 more. This will leave Evan with 5 women from which to choose while he wines and dines them and basks them in a fairytale lifestyle before dropping the bomb – not only is he not a millionaire…but he is a cheapskate, too.
