Militants Give Us Reporter 24 Hours to Live

A militant Pakistani group believed to be holding the Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl threatened to kill him within 24 hours and warned all US journalists to leave the country within three days. By David Teather.
A militant Pakistani group believed to be holding the Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl threatened to kill him within 24 hours and warned all US journalists to leave the country within three days.

The death threat, sent last night by email to news organisations in the US and Pakistan claimed that Mr Pearl was an agent for the Israeli intelligence service Mossad. "Therefore we will execute him within 24 hours unless Amreeka (sic) fulfils our demands," the email read.

Mr Pearl disappeared a week ago from Karachi where he was researching a story on the shoe bomber Richard Reid. An earlier email from an organisation calling itself the National Movement for the Restoration of Pakistani Sovereignty sent to news organisations at the weekend claimed responsibility.

The first email included four pictures of Mr Pearl, one with a gun against his head. The organisation is demanding lawyers and trials for Pakistanis being held in Guatanamo Bay, Cuba.

A statement from the newspaper denied that Mr Pearl was an agent for any other organisation: "He is a reporter for us - nothing more or less. He cannot affect the policy of the US or Pakistani government. Nor can we."
