Judge in Robert Downey Jr.’s Case Grants Extension

During a recent pre-trial hearing for Robert Downey Jr., the Ally McBeal star’s defense team requested and received a postponement for the trial.
As many other aspects of his life and career seem to be settling down, Robert Downey Jr. is preparing for yet another courtroom appearance -- one that will determine the state of his immediate future and personal freedom. Although his chances of acquittal or of receiving leniency from the state are virtually non-existent, Superior Court Judge B.J. Bjork granted Downey’s team until February 21st to compile their defending arguments. The judge also requested that the defense and prosecuting teams work out some type of settlement arrangement prior to that date. Sources close to the case are speculating that the judge wants to avoid as much of a media frenzy in his court as possible. Downey was present at the Monday hearing, but spoke only to say that he indeed was aware and agreed with the requested delay.

As negotiations for a plea bargain in the case continue, many in the industry are left to wonder about Downey’s uncertain future and his subsequent future health, especially if he is not forced into intensive physical and mental therapy to combat his drug addictions.

The current trial resulted from Downey’s arrest on November 25, 2000 at a Palm Springs hotel, when he charged with possession of cocaine and a tranquilizer, crimes punishable by up to 4 years in prison. The circumstances surrounding the arrest are apparently at the core of the negotiation proceedings.
