The Dalai Lama was last night seriously ill in a hospital in Bombay after severe stomach pains forced him to abandon a Buddhist festival and seek emergency medical treatment.

The 66-year-old Tibetan spiritual leader was taken by helicopter from the town of Bodh Gaya in eastern India to the state capital of Patna. He was then flown to Bombay.

Doctors were yesterday carrying out tests on the Dalai Lama, who according to one report is suffering from a lump in his stomach. "It is serious," a well-informed source told the Guardian last night.

The prospect that the Dalai Lama could be seriously ill will delight Beijing, which believes that Tibetan nationalism will disappear after his death.

The Dalai Lama's aides yesterday made light of his condition, but admitted he had been suffering from abdominal pain since mid-December. He has so far not responded to either western or Tibetan medicine.

The Dalai Lama had been due to preside over the Kalchakra festival, attended by 200,000 pilgrims. It was called off at the last minute when the Dalai Lama said he would be incapable of sitting up to teach.
