The Days of "The Dream" Numbered in Houston
Hakeem in another uniform. You'd never think so, but that's what Hakeem would like if it would benefit the Rockets. Could you see Olajuwon in a different city soon? SC's Brandon Engebretson reports.

The Houston Rockets are contemplating trading the cornerstone of their organization, Hakeem Olajuwon. And teams are lining up for a shot at "The Dream", because to them, he could be the key to a championship. There are suitors all over the NBA: the Miami Heat and the rest of the East division that could use a center. Although a split probably wouldn't benefit the Rockets at all, and probably won't happen for numerous reasons.
Olajuwon has stated he wouldn't mind playing for the Heat. Perfect idea, right? Olajuwon has one year left on his contract and the Heat don't have Alonzo Mourning until next year. Rent a player and make a run at the championship. One problem. Who are the Rockets going to get in return for the legend? Not a whole lot, because the Heat need all those players to get to the Finals. Maybe some bench players, but bench players don't add up to a $16.5 million dollars. This deal could happen in an offseason, but not in midseason, like it is now.
How about another team that could use a center? Like the Orlando Magic or the New York Knicks? That same problem shows up: the salary cap.
There is that other opportunity for Olajuwon to get out of Houston. Waivers are the most likely way out of Houston. But even those are a long shot. The Rockets are not going to let their franchise go on waivers. Plus, they don't want to pay him the rest of his contract to play for another team.
So look for the currently-injured Olajuwon to finish the season in Houston. The offseason could be different though. Many options await this center. He could resign with the Rockets for less money, retire, or probably go to another team with a short contract so he has a chance to go out on top. Where should The Dream go?
