When You Don’t Call

It’s a poem about how I feel when my long-distance "boyfriend" doesn’t call for months at a time.
When you don’t call:
It brings tears to my eyes:
My heart loses its beat:
I wipe the tears I’ve cried:
My cuts grow deeper:
My stress level goes up:
I wonder if you’re okay:
Or if my love is no longer enough:
If you still feel the love I do:
If you still care:
If you are hurt:
Or even still out there:
But then the phone rings:
And the joy your voice brings:
Lifts my spirit:
My heart begins to sing:
But then the happiness goes away:
For it can never stay:
The phone doesn’t ring again:
For the next 36 days:
So now I’m back:
In this world of hurt:
Feeling worthless and crummy:
Like the feel of dirt:
